EFFORTLESS

DETECTION

CABLE

OASYS Cable is the first subsea sonar system that is capable of automatic cable recognition. Real-time cable integrity, no point and click.

Automatic cable integrity and touchdown point (TDP) monitoring

OASYS Cable is a vessel-fixed sonar system that detects the cable automatically and measures its geometry, touchdown point and integrity values in real time.

OASYS Cable is used for cable lay monitoring, generating live as-laid data, as well as daily as-laid reports, including key cable integrity parameters like bottom tension and catenary length.

How it works

  1. A 2D multibeam sonar on the ECE-PT-1000 scans the cable and seabed continuously and builds a 3D pointcloud.
  2. Cable and seabed reflections are automatically detected and the catenary is calculated (at 5-10 Hz).
  3. Bend radius, departure angle, tension and touchdown point are shown live, with alarms against your limits.
  4. Every lay is stored for replay, and the as-laid track is ready as a deliverable as soon as required.

Benefits

Lower operating cost

  • One operator per 12-hour shift

  • No ROV needed for TDP monitoring, no downtime due to currents or other workability limits

  • As-laid track in deliverable quality available when needed

  • Second-end cut calculations and post-lay survey possible with same system

Lower installation risk

  • Automatic detection removes operator errors

  • Live bend radius and tension values, with alarms before limits are reached

  • Live view of the seabed ahead of the TDP, for obstacle avoidance and accurate routing

  • All personnel on board have access to the operational overview they need

Seabed is scanned & meshed automatically

3

A cross-section of the seabed profile at touchdown point is visualised on the right side of the screen

4

The most important information is visualised using sliders. Alarms can be raised if the current value approaches a predefined threshold.

5

20-30m of seabed in front of the cable’s touchdown point is scanned. This allows for assessment of trench geometry or to identify boulders.

All cable installation & integrity parameters are combined in a single web-interface.

Seabed, vessel and cable are visualised in a 3D environment or 2D map view.

Cable integrity values are displayed using sliders and info boxes. Determined values can be verified against threshold values to provide an early warning system

OASYS is database driven – all lay operations can be replayed at a later time for quality control or for operator training purposes

Auxilliary uses

  1. Monitor second-end pull-in operations by tracking the quadrant and suspended catenaries.
  2. Accurately lay cables in curves using OASYS’ real-time visualisation of seabed and route position track.

Accuracy

OASYS performance plots showing the mean offset (μ), 90% interval and number of measurements (N)

5 graphs showing the distance between the as-found survey and OASYS as-laid track.

OASYS has been used to monitor over 200 export & array cable lay operations:

  •  Data from post-lay surveys was compared with OASYS as-laid tracks and found to match very well. OASYS’  mean as-laid offset from the as-found is on average 0.21m, which is equal to the typical cable diameter. Of all measurements, 90% fall within 1.09m from the as-found.
  • Second-end cut mark calculations can be performed instantly. The obtained cut mark values always matched with ROV / beacon obtained values.
  • OASYS performs very well at high seastates or strong current conditions. The system continued to monitor cable integrity at significant wave heights of 4.5m and accurately determined the touchdown point while the cable was subject to current conditions of 3.5 knots.
